Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

I have 2 questions that I think would fit here nicely. You have a bow that is 50 lbs. You shot this bow for years with minimal set. You get a sholder injury and decide to take the bow down to 40 lbs...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

Wow. A lot of info in this thread so far contradicts my own experience, so I better read carefully. This question was asked in the TTB. A test bow was made, then forced into high set. The bow was then...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

Walnut is much lighter than hickory and needs to be made considerably wider for the same poundage. Not such a bad wood if you allow for it. I have used maple backs on wanut but never had a stave bow...

What Ken said! Bows with set that is easily "corrected" by hand were a lot on my mind lately.

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

I would like to ask about sinew in here for a second. Sinew over a bows back is often known to reduce/remove string follow from a bow. Also it can add poundage. All this is done with the back of the...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

My understanding of sinew is that it's just like backing a bow with wood but just a different material. The sinew doesn't cure the belly damage that causes the set/string follow but pulls the bow into...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

If yuou build a 50# bow that takes set and goes down to 45# say. You add sinew and get it back to 50#. The belly is still broken down and will have more hysterisis than a belly not broken down, the...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

"I would like to pose another possible answer to the question, what causes set by saying that on SOME woods, it can be caused by overstressing the back, to the point the tension wood will not assist...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

I may be completely wrong but my guess as to why we blame the belly for taking the set is because wood is far more elastic in compression than in tension. Again I don't have anything to back this up...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

Funny, the same discussion is happening elsewhere. My 2 cents ........... Take a flat board, induce set , carefully cut in half between the belly and back wood and I think you'll find the back goes...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

I made a bow as a sort of a light hearted joke; it was a cut off from an ipe plank; 5/4" by 5/16" almost exactly; and 72" long. I wondered if the ipe had enough elasticity to make a usable bow in this...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

What occurs to me is to make a pair of marks; perhaps fine pen lines on the belly and the back of a board bow; or some relatively flat bow, and make sure they're distance apart is know; measured for...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

Here is an example.   I bent this bow until it took excessive set.  It broke and what you see is the back goes back to straight and the bell keeps the set. .  You will notice that the back that...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

If you were to split that back half in half again, what would happen? What would have happened if that back was cut before the bow was ever even bent to start with? I ask that question because when...

I am not sure what would happen if I split it again, Don't know if I could find the pieces again. Took these pics a while ago. It was a straight stave but small. So I just marked out the handle and...

Re: An old question with a possiable new answer?

Quick $.02. Several times people have said on this thread that sinew holds reflex, raises draw weight, and shoots snappier because it doesn't stretch. The opposite is true. Sinew stretches like crazy,...
